SAN FRANCISCO, CA, AUGUST 12, 2000 — The One Act Players, a San Francisco-based voice acting collective, today announced the launch of Episode One of their five-part audio theatre serial, "The Amazing Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon".  One Act (www.oneact.org) will distribute Episode One: The New Planet via the Internet and limited edition CD.

Remember the days when you could curl up on a Saturday evening in front of the fire with a snifter of brandy and listen to the exciting, mysterious and wonderful sounds of radio theatre? Well, neither do we. But we sure like the sound of it all – the idea of using our imaginations ... and we're betting the audience does, too.

One Act is a non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation and furtherance of the art of audio theatre. Using the latest in digital audio technologies and the distribution power of the Internet, One Act seeks to re-establish the "theatre of the mind" experience as a vibrant entertainment form for listeners of all ages around the globe. Borrowing a line from the late Carl Sagan, the Flash Gordon CD invites the listener to "Explore the Cosmos in a Ship of the Imagination."

Alex Raymond’s Flash Gordon is one of the most enduring icons of American science fiction, action, and adventure.  Beginning with his comic strip debut in 1934, Flash has captivated audiences in print, on radio, and in film ever since.  The Amazing Interplanetary Adventures of Flash Gordon is One Act’s inaugural recording project.

The One Act adaptation weaves material from the original radio scripts with writing done specifically for these recordings.  One Act Executive Director, Glenn Carlson, explains, “We wanted to develop a compelling story arc over five episodes, and that required taking some creative liberties.  For example, Episode Two: Captured by the Sharkmen is an original script written for the project, but it follows the 1930s storyline, and hews close to the tone and voice of Flash and the other serials of the period.”

“The One Act Players really capture the feeling of old time radio.  The Flash Gordon performances are outstanding and the production values authentic to the period. I loved it. What fun!”

— Taylor Korobow, Founder and Director, The Voice Factory

“The One Act Players have found their niche. They are talented, creative, and above all, entertaining. Their characters are solid and well developed, and will definitely hold your attention. I, for one, can’t wait to see what they’ll do next.”

— CW Wolfe, Voice Over Director

The San Francisco-based One Act Players produce studio recordings and present on-air (radio and Internet) broadcasts of both old time radio classics and adaptations of classic and contemporary material. One Act strives to give voice to writers working in this unique, but under-produced medium of audio theatre. The Players are comfortable genre-hoppers, embracing science fiction, mystery, drama, and comedy with equal enthusiasm and aplomb. More information about the organization and the players themselves can be found at the group's web site www.oneact.org.
